The PBTRC team was invited to attend the 23rd Pacific Basin Medical Association (PBMA) Conference 2024 hosted in Koror, Republic of Palau. The event theme was focused on embracing “One Health” Tides of Change in the Pacific Medical Practice. The conference explored the integration of human, environmental, and animal health concepts related to patient care. Dr. Christina Higa’s presentation, “Telehealth Policy & Law in the Pacific Basin” highlighted important considerations for implementing appropriate and relevant legislation.
The PBTRC team offered an exhibition to share educational resources with attendees on current telehealth projects and networked with providers to discuss improving healthcare equity across the Pacific Region.
In addition, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is now authorized to provide health care to Veterans living in the Compact of Free Association (COFA) nations, including the Republic of Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands. Implementation of VA services in COFA has not yet begun. PBTRC team members are part of a University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UHM) research initiative to explore military culture and health needs for Pacific Islander Veterans.
During the time in Palau, PBTRC had the opportunity to engage with Palauan Veterans and capture their stories through individual interviews and focus groups. Veterans highlighted the impact of long-standing challenges with access to services for health care needs and numerous Veteran benefits. UHM’s study with Veteran feedback will inform VA and non-VA provider education, training, and policy to develop quality and effective health services for Pacific Islander Veterans.
